Sasabe, Mexico, June 28th I met a Hispanic pastor here in Tucson who had started a church in the small border town of Sasabe, Mexico, about 65 miles from Tucson. He invited me to come and minister at a service they were having June 28th, so five people from our church and I drove to Sasabe to take part. Like many border towns in Mexico, once you cross the US border, it was like you just went a 1000 miles away. The nice paved rode ended, and everywhere you looked you saw the signs of poverty. We arrived at the church, that consisted of block walls and a tin roof, and were able to help in pouring the water into the newly formed baptismal to baptize the new believers later in the service. It was humbling for us knowing that our Mexican brothers had to drive a distance, and make two trips, just to get enough water to fill the baptismal. They had no air conditioning, nor padded pews or carpet, but that didn't stop these joyous believers as they praised the Lord during a 4 1/2 hour service! They sang, testified of God's goodness, sang some more, prayed for one another and sang yet more. I brought a message, and then we prayed for several and watched God once again begin to heal and bring comfort. A woman with severe pain and swelling in her right foot was healed after we prayed for several minutes, and others were touched and comforted by God's love as we prayed for their needs.
We started the baptism service. Two people were scheduled, but five ended up getting baptized as God's joy filled the church! The man pictured above getting baptized recently gave his life to Christ after being an alcoholic from age ten to fifty-five - how awesome to see a life changed by Jesus! Afterwards, we continued the celebration with more worship and then shared a meal together. What a great day! The pastor has asked us to come back again, and we look forward to bringing an even bigger team to minister to the people there. It turns out they have been praying for an electrician to help them, and one of our church members who went with us, is an electrician, and has volunteered to help them finish the wiring!
